DNS Exercise 2 continues where you left off in DNS Ex 1 or DNS A.  As the development of the baby progresses beyond the 3rd month, we begin to see sagittal stabilization integrated into the higher developmental positions. While we focused on homologous or undifferentiated positions in Exercise 1 or DNS A, the higher positions are differentiated and include both the ipsilateral and contralateral patterns we briefly touched on during the first course. In DNS 2, we will go over these higher-level positions and how to utilize DNS principles including planned movement of the extremities (phasic & support), joint centration and sagittal stabilization to train or improve functional global motor patterns. This course includes positions such as low oblique sit, high oblique sit, tripod, half kneel, differentiated quadruped and more.   We will discuss strategies for choosing exercises/positions based on your clients needs or daily demands, whether they are post-rehab, an athlete playing a specific sport or just someone trying to take care of themselves and optimize their strength and movement.  We will get into more detail about phasic and support functions and how the quality of support drives the quality of movement up and down the chain.  The more you understand DNS principles, the more you can implement the approach to help your clients meet their goals.  When you see the connection and integration of proper respiration and stabilization function with the extremities and how much you can influence the quality of movement as you understand what you are looking for… this is where it gets really fun!

Course Objectives

  • Review of developmental kinesiology in the context of adult optimal posture, sports performance, and global motor patterns to enhance outcomes in human movement and sport.
  • Demonstrate exercises in higher developmental positions – tripod, bear, squat, lunge, step up and its modifications & training of body awareness.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of differentiated muscle pull in phasic vs support function and how to utilize planned movement to improve the quality of stabilization and motor patterns in developmental positions.
  • Demonstrate exercises utilizing the principles of developmental kinesiology with elastic bands, barbells, weights, and gymball
  • Discuss & demonstrate DNS exercises for specific movements and sport motions

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Erin McGuire PT, OCS has been practicing physical therapy for over 25 years, 21 of them at her Los Angeles practice, Back in Balance Physical Therapy.  She received board certification as an orthopedic clinical specialist in 2002.  Early in her career she was introduced to the movement systems approach and by 2003 she was taking her first “DNS” course with the founder of DNS,  Pavel Kolar.  Erin became one of the first internationally certified DNS practitioners in 2009, started assisting DNS courses in 2012, then became a DNS international instructor in 2017. Her passion for movement and practice of DNS has increased her interest and focus on the diaphragm and its functions, relating to both respiration and intra-abdominal pressure, and the key role they play in creating optimal stabilization and movement.  After years of seeing how widespread impaired diaphragm function is with all activity levels of the population and how difficult improving diaphragm activity was for her clients, she created the core360 belt in 2014. Utilizing the core360 belt, it became more evident how improving diaphragm activity had an immediate and instantaneous impact on the quality of movement and stabilization patterns. Training of this key muscle became front-and-center in her treatment strategy with every client. Through teaching and the core360 belt, her passion and goal is to assist other practitioners in furthering their understanding of the diaphragm’s role in movement and why assessing and training good diaphragm function is a necessity with all our clients.

COVID Protocol & Procedures: the health and safety of our participants is our priority.  We will start by limiting the number of participants and modify this number based on COVID trends as we get closer to the course date.  We will monitor current COVID status as the date of the course approaches and make determinations about specific protocols we feel are necessary, such as mask wearing and proof of vaccination, to do our best to ensure your safety.

Cancellation Policy:  All cancellations received no later than 21 days prior to course date will be fully refunded minus a $75 administrative fee.  We are unable to make refunds for cancellations made within 21 days of course date. 

While we never anticipate needing to do so, Back in Balance Physical Therapy and Erin McGuire reserve the right to cancel the course due to unforeseen circumstances or low course participant numbers at any time up to 21 days prior to course date.  Full refunds will be provided to participants when course is cancelled by Back in Balance.
